Carbon Reduction 2010 Delivering a Low Carbon Future - A New Decade of Transformation

"This Coalition ...can demonstrate in government a new progressive partnership... passionate about building a green economy.
"The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to fulfil their joint ambitions for a low carbon and eco-friendly economy. We are agreed that we would seek to increase the target for energy from renewable sources, subject to the advice of the Climate Change Committee."

Rt. Hon. David Cameron, Prime Minister, 12th May 2010

GovToday presents Carbon Reduction 2010: Delivering a Low Carbon Future - A New Decade of Transformation Conference and Exhibition, which will be held at Church House Conference Centre on 29th June 2010.

GovToday has produced a series of successful annual Conferences, which have examined the former UK Government's Sustainable Development Strategy - an all-encompassing remit, which takes into account social, environmental and economic development - and how this interlinks with/impacts upon policy to reduce the UK's carbon emissions under the Climate Change Act 2008; creating a sustainable legacy for the future.

Carbon Reduction 2010: Delivering a Low Carbon Future - A New Decade of Transformation is GovToday's Annual Summit providing analysis of the UK's overall progress on this agenda and, with a new Coalition Government in place, will give an insight into the future direction of Government policy on this agenda.

This year, following the Copenhagen International Summit on Climate Change, this Conference will also put our progress into context within the international arena. The 'Copenhagen Accord' "recognises" the scientific case for keeping temperature rises to no more than 2°C, but, unfortunately, failed to include commitments to vital emissions reductions to achieve that goal.

Despite the disappointment of Copenhagen, the former UK Government reaffirmed our leadership role, and commitment to, tackling climate change and carbon reduction. This process - begun in the UK with the historic 'Climate Change Act 2008' and the launch of the 'Transition to a Low Carbon Economy' strategy in 2009 - is now set to continue unabated and will move to action on the ground, effecting all areas of our daily lives.

Moreover, on 29th January 2010, the EU submitted a unilateral commitment to reduce the EU's overall emissions by 20 per cent of 1990 levels and a conditional offer to increase this cut to 30 per cent provided that other major emitters agree to take on their fair share of a global reduction effort. On March 3rd 2010, the ‘Europe 2020’ Strategy was launched, which highlights the future approach to ‘green’ economic growth and tackling carbon reduction, with ratification expected by June 2010.

With countries now supporting the 'Copenhagen Accord' accounting for more than 80 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, both the UK and the EU are leading the world in delivering on this agenda, renewing hope for continued international progress.

With a new Coalition Government in place, The Carbon Reduction 2010: Delivering a Low Carbon Future - A New Decade of Transformation provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the future priorities, examine new strategies and set this agenda into context within the International arena, with a particular focus on EU policy - revealing the future challenges for the UK in achieving our commitment to delivering a low carbon future.
